Eight Isle of Wight players helped England win big in Porto, with the side going unbeaten to lift the Madjer Cup.
England’s U16 Beach Soccer team secured a flawless 4 out of 4 record in the debut tournament, finishing with a dominant 8-1 victory over Portuguese side ACD O Sótão in Sunday’s (24th August) final.
Playing under the scorching Portuguese sun, the team had battled through a series of 3×12 minute matches with grit, unity and standout individual performances to reach the final.
Ashton Cox, based on the Isle of Wight, was crowned both Most Valuable Player and Top Goal Scorer of the tournament. He was joined by fellow Isle of Wight talents James Denness, Bobby Humber, Dylan Wightwick, Euan St. John-Biggs, Luca Brihmani, Milo Pike and team captain Oliver Flood.
Goalkeepers James Denness and Bobby Humber were composed and commanding in goal, while Dylan Wightwick, Euan St. John-Biggs and Milo Pike drove the team forward through midfield and attack. Luca Brihmani added strength and tactical control to the team.
Cox’s goalscoring heroics proved decisive, and Flood led with composure throughout the tournament, lifting the trophy after England’s commanding win in the final.
The result marks a major milestone for England Beach Soccer’s youth programme – and a proud moment for the Isle of Wight’s growing contribution to the national team.
