The Isle of Wight will join communities across the UK in marking Baby Loss Awareness Week between Thursday 9th and Wednesday 15th October 2025.
This is part of a national campaign to raise awareness of the impact of pregnancy and baby loss, and to provide opportunities for remembrance and support.
Across the island, ribbon displays will appear in public spaces, lovingly organised by local families and supporters to honour babies who have died and to offer a space for quiet reflection.
Some islanders will also take part in the Virtual 5km Ribbon Run on Saturday 11th October, using the Medina Park Run trail to unite in memory and movement. Kaylee will be at Park Run to support participants, while Sammy will complete the longer 15km Virtual Ribbon Run in West Wight. She will finish at Cath and Mike’s Café, where she will hold a safe space for reflection and sharing for anyone who wishes to join.
Isle of Wight Sands will host its October Support Group on Monday 13th October, 18:00-20:00 at the Newport Wellbeing Centre. The evening will provide a safe, welcoming space for anyone affected by pregnancy or baby loss, at any stage and no matter how long ago, to share experiences and take part in gentle memory-making craft activities. All are welcome.
The week will conclude on Wednesday 15th October with the Global Wave of Light, an international event where bereaved families around the world light candles at 19:00 local time in remembrance of all babies who have died. Each flame burns for at least an hour, creating a continuous wave of light across the globe. Isle of Wight Sands invites anyone who wishes to take part to light a candle at home or in a place that feels special.
Isle of Wight Sands is run entirely by volunteers and welcomes support. Any contribution helps the charity continue its work locally. Upcoming projects include the group’s entry at the Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival, where a special remembrance tree honours babies lost within the community.
