Water bills for Isle of Wight households look set to rise by an average of around £180 in the next 5 years, it has been revealed. Southern Water customers – that is every household and business on the Island – are facing a significant increase in bills between now and 2030, in fact, the region will see the biggest increases in the entire country. Island Echo reported back in May that the water utility company wanted to see the average bill rise to around £915 a year, from £479 that households are paying now, to help fund infrastructure investment which would include reducing the use of storm overflows. This would have been a 91% increase for billpayers. Ofwat, the Government regulator, hasn’t approved that massive hike but has, in a draft proposal, suggested a slightly smaller increase of around 73%. It means the average bill could top £700. A final decision will be made at the end of the year. Stuart Ledger, Southern Water’s chief financial officer, said:
“Since submitting our business plan in October, we have continued to engage with stakeholders and customers, to feed into Ofwat’s process. “We are now reviewing Ofwat’s Draft Determination, and we will publish our response on 28 August 2024, ahead of Ofwat’s Final Determination in December 2024.”

Firstly having millions of extra people here, DOES impact on ‘most everything’ be it fresh water consumption, sewage, gas, electricity, food, landfill, congestion, pollution, house prices, rent prices, etc etc, so I say is correct to say his or her piece on most topics.
Secondly re the shareholders. The UK Government PRIVATISED water, and other utility companies. So they gained billions in doing so from big businesses and private people buying a few shares.
So like ANY investor, they take a huge risk, as IF a company losses money, then not only do they get less dividend, (like low interest on a bank account) BUT they can’t sell up their shares unless at a huge loss.
The “government”, under Thatcher’s doctrine, effectively gave away the utilities. There was no risk to the buyers as they had a totally captive market and no competition. They and their bankers have been milking it ever since.
Socialist Labour trying to get involved! The companies deserve profit, the shareholders need dividends. We should offer them a tax break to show gratitude.
We could all club together and give them all our savings too…….and our houses. Bless those poor, poor shareholders.
Just once I’d like to see a regulator that protected the customers of the companies they’re supposed to be regulating rather than the shareholders of those companies and the big bonuses of their senior managers.
Unlike commercial companies, SW have no competition. They are a monopoly. Their executives do not deserve the same rewards as competitive companies and ought not to be paid salaries or bonuses as those. OFWAT is a regulator with no teeth and no intention of getting what is best for the consumer.

That’s 9% per annum at first, 6.2% compound. Remember that the outgoing “government” was trumpeting that inflation (which largely influences interest rates) had plummeted to 2.5%.

Every householder is being ripped with charges for returning the water to the sewer (95%) for treatment. It is not being treated, they are giving the money to shareholders and bosses. If the new government want to prove their worth, sort the problem out. Surely this is some kind of fraudulent charges.
And we have no choice, we can’t swap companies for our water bills, biggest rip off is the standing charges. If I paid for my water received and waste it should be less than £100 per year, instead because of the standing it’s nearly £400, that’s a rip off
