The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed that a school in Newport activated its lockdown policy after a teenager was spotted with what was thought to be a gun.
A 16-year-old girl was sighted carrying a black ‘handgun’ at the Island Learning Centre on Albany Road, Newport shortly before 11:45 this morning (Thursday).
The school quickly and successfully activated its lockdown policy and the teenager left the school.
Police were alerted to the situation and intercepted the youngster on St James’ Street, where unfortunately a Police officer sustained a head injury, as first reported by Island Echo.
A 16-year-old girl from Ryde has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and remains in custody at this time.
A BB Gun was recovered by firearms officers.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council says that no pupils or staff were physically harmed, and the school is due to reopen tomorrow as normal with appropriate support in place for those affected by this incident.
