ISLAND LEAGUE ROUND UP: W&B RETURN TO THE TOP OF THE TABLE

Perennial Division 1 champions, Whitecroft & Barton Sports, have returned to their familiar position at the top of Isle of Wight Division 1 after narrowly beating an improved Vectis side 1-0 at Sandy Lane.

Alex Wright was the man on target for W&B with a spectacular 25-yard strike in the 27th minute. It was a very creditable performance from Vectis, who felt they had matched the champions and should have been awarded a penalty. W&B now have a maximum 18 points from the 6 games they have played so far.

It was a good day for both W&B sides, with the reserves beating Whitley Wanderers Eagles 3-1 to march on to the next round of the Hampshire FA Vase. The scorers for W&B Reserves were Liam Slaven, Charlie Shaw and Lorry Stanton.

Shanklin have moved up to 2nd place in Division 1 after beating bottom club Sandown & Lake in the Bay Derby at the County Ground. Sandown held out until the final 15 minutes of the game, when they were undone with strikes from Nicky Vyse, Sam Mosely, George Carter-Knight and Ollie Floss. Shanklin now have 17 points from their 7 games.

Bembridge, who did not play Saturday, have now fallen to 3rd, 2 points behind W&B. However, it was still a great day for Bembridge, with their reserves winning 1-5 at Ryde Saints to top Combination 1. Newly formed Bembridge ‘A’ did even better, beating a luckless Newchurch side 14-0 to go to the top of Combination 2.

In Division 2, East Cowes Sports comfortably beat bottom side Wroxall 5-0 at the GKN Sports Ground to remain in top spot in the Division 1 table with 21 points from 8 games. Pan are in 2nd place after beating Wootton 1-4 at Wootton Rec and now have 19 points from their 8 games. High Park are 3rd after narrowly beating 4th-placed Yarmouth & Calbourne 3-2 at Steyne Park.
