Newport IW FC is to begin collections for local foodbanks at home games this season.
The new initiative will begin at the first match of the season this Saturday at Beatrice Avenue when The Port welcome Fawley.
The new Chairman of the Supporters Trust, Steve Rackett said:
“Newport is very much a community club – owned by all of us as members and connected to our friends and neighbours, many of whom are going through difficult times. We can use our position as community leaders to help local food pantries to widen the number of collection points on the Island, so we are asking supporters to bring along items of non-perishable food or unopened essentials for the kitchen or bathroom and place it in the collection box when they enter the ground.”
“In addition, in recognition of the current economic climate and a wish to see more families at our games, we have now extended free entry to all under 16s at all home games”
Since the end of last season, the number of people who are members of the Supporters Trust has doubled and seven more people have come forward to join the committee that runs the body.
As well as continuing to play in Wessex League Division One, the club will have a new reserves team, playing in Island League Division Two.

Best thing you can do is put loads of boxes of condoms in the collection box to try and stop these people reproducing. Don’t give these scum free food as well as all those benefits.
With huge energy bills and other cost of living increases, a lot of working people are struggling, but posh boys like you wouldnt know that. Or do you live with your mum still?
Willbur isn’t a “posh boy”. He’s a gammon.
Thick as mince and just as fat.
Shame the old knut who fathered you didn’t take that advice.
Or saw what a scumbag you’d grow up to be and strangled you at birth.
I think his “dad” may have paid for the experience.
thats the final straw – I am only interested in watching football – not having yet another place that I go to, having someone begging for my money or my food. There are food banks already -stick to what you should be focusing on and that is football.
I was looking forward to this new season – but I won’t bother now
it is bad enough getting pestered in the streets, begging letters, emails, adverts – every where you go someone has their hand out. now the football – enough is enough
Doesn’t look like there’s any begging. It says there’s a collection point, just like there is in some supermarkets.
And don’t all the Wessex League (which is supporting Wessex cancer this season) teams have collections, appeals and fundraising at their games anyway? Of course you’d know that if you had ever gone to see any of these sides , which you obviously haven’t.
Like you have ever been to a match.
Agree,,a football match on a sat afternoon is not the place to encourage this
I suppose it will distract from all the mess Newport Football club has managed to get itself into.
Perhaps all the other clubs should have begging bowls out for Newport FC
40% of households in economic deprivation aka Poverty are WORKING!! UK never saw foodbanks until 2010: Bedroom Tax, Highest ever VAT, the same with NI – “to pay for Social Care’ NOT
Tax-avoiding, deregulated companies trade basic, essential Utilities-as-commodities, betting on £ crashing, rewarding troughing shareholders, whilst charging captive service users, above-inflation, skyrocketing bills.
+ Increased & rising homelessness + 5 million on NHS treatment lists in 2019 GE: now 7+ millions.
Even if you’re not directly affected by this, you still could be: job loss, eviction, relationship breakdown, accident, bereavement, medical diagnosis can happen to any of us. Food banks in 21C UK sucks!
Stop whining elemental – it is pathetic.
As Dole payments, rent subsidise are the SAME for everyone now we have ‘equality’ then as ALL are treated equally, it is odd that ‘some’ allegedly need food banks, yet others can live fine without such.
So, perhaps, just perhaps the fault sits firmly with the dim womb owners who selfishly fill and empty such when they could use free contraception and not inflict this ‘oh so awful poverty struck life’ on their own children.
But, then of course, they would not be given a free house, free c.tax, thousands a week in tax credits, child allowance, free prescriptions and dentistry, ALL for emptying a womb and burdening society with yet ‘another’ mouth to feed and eventually house at OUR expense
