Islanders are being reminded to stay at home this weekend to help further prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Although it is known that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will make an announcement on Sunday evening, confirming an action plan for the ‘rollback’ and announcing some minor changes to lockdown, the lockdown still remains in place this weekend.
Simon Bryant, the Isle of Wight Council’s director of public health, and spokesperson for the HIOW Local Reliance Forum said:
“The overwhelming majority of local residents continue to observe the stay at home message, but as time goes by we are seeing a small, but increasing number, travelling unnecessarily and going out when they don’t need to.
“We know this is hard, and that people are fed up and yearn to go out to spend time with friends and loves ones, but with people still becoming seriously ill and dying from the virus, and with no effective treatment available yet, now is not the time to push the boundaries.
“This bank holiday weekend, please celebrate VE Day at home with your immediate household, and virtually with friends and family — if we all keep going, we can get back to what, or who, we love sooner.”
Government guidance asks that we stay at home to save lives – although the ‘stay at home’ element is due to be dropped. This means:
- only going outside for food or health reasons or work (but only if you cannot work from home);
- if you go out, staying two metres (6 feet) away from other people at all times;
- washing your hands as soon as you get home; and
- not meeting others, even family or friends.

Get out and soak up some vit d and make your imune system strong locking your selfs away like sheep lowing your natural defenses
So if everyone stayed home as ‘urged’ then there would be no point in urging people to download that app thing would there as they’d never then meet anyone to record any data of meets – which the app has been designed to do.
Nothing confusing there then eh………
Make your minds up on the advice for goodness sake!!!
And I presume the ferries are busy bringing people to the IoW for ‘essential journeys’ this weekend.
What are the authorities doing about that then?
It’s hardly as if cars can sneak onto the ferries halfway across the Solent is it?
Best go for the law abiding easy targets instead then. Nice and safe.
No, we have to await those who are not abiding by the rules, to then tell us, we can do as they have been doing, not what they tell us to do.
Go out be free or when the next seasonal flu comes round it will be worse make your imune system strong the government want you to stay weak and thank them for saving you all with a vacine thank you bill gates. Stay away from the news thats whats spreads the fear so much fear that you stay away from your friends familily your children and granchildren but do you actualy no any one who is ill
Yes, I do know someone who’s ill. The trouble with people like you is that you don’t watch the news and see what is happening across the world. I want my family and friends to be as safe as possible, therefore I won’t be going to see them, it’s called sacrifice. Today there’re more people going out, is it because they’ve got the app and feel safer? What a load of bull, the app doesn’t keep you safe! It just let’s you know if you’ve been close to someone (for about 15mins) who is later is diagnosed with Covid 19, if they can get tested of course!
I follow more than mainstream news i research and follow real people story check out film my hospital let your eyes see the lies then read about how you really catch a virus open your eyes do some research your body has the perfect weapon for seaonal flu its called an immune system if you lock yoir self up and live in fear and stress, walking around in masks that cuts your oxygen all this lowers your immune system to keep you weak so your not ready for next seasonal flu the truth is coming out now. your aload out because the government said you can its funny how this was timed perfect with flu i wonder what the death figures are for all respiratory deseaes since this appered seems no one dying from any thing other than corona. People are going out because no one is ill around them and because there going out the sun is doing its job making your body work how it should be free and soak up some of that happy drug the sun stand up against the lies
I think the island police should be waiting at the ferry terminals to check who’s coming over
even better the police should be at the ferry ports at Portsmouth & Southampton stopping them boarding in the first place wouldn’t it be easier to issue key workers with some form of id card to say that they are a key worker then if you don’t have the card you don’t travel simple anyone travelling to the mainland for cancer treatment would have a letter to say they have the appointment thus allowing them to travel as essential travel the rest no proof no travel the ferry companies should be given the right to question reason for travel & the right to refuse travel the country is in a state of Crisis there must be some act that could be passed to allow the ferry companies to question & refuse under emergency measures
discriminatory policy – if uk citizens are prevented from travelling from portsmouth to the isle of wight, then other citizens should be prevented from travelling from newport to ryde or from leeds to liverpool etc.
cannot be one rule for one.
tt
Surprising the number of people abiding in holiday parks.. Take a walk in some and you’ll see and not all from the Island.
The amount of people who have taken the p**s by going out and buying paint, flowers and other items that are not essential has made me embarrassed to be British. Times like this we should stand together, it’s great to see so many people support the NHS on Thursdays by clapping. Your not supporting them if you flout the rules for yourselves though are you? Shops having to put people in potential danger to serve people who think they can use it as an excuse. Makes me sick. Do as your told for once and then we wouldn’t need an app. It’s always been said that humanity is to clever for its own good, well this just proves it…
Abey do as your told
Times like this we should stand together,
NO, how about not.
I will go out if i want to. If you feel vulnerable then stay indoors, where you won’t see anyone.
99.98% of people will be fine, with nothing more than mild symptoms. Those odds mean i go out.
I’d like to know where you got your stats from. How would you feel if you went out and in 3 weeks one of your family members die from it? It’s not an advisory, it’s policy.
publicly available stats – search for them yourself and then do the calculations – it is simple enough.
so then marcus – to ensure that you get water, electric, gas, internet, banking, food, transport, NHS, sewage removal, bins collected and everything else you take for granted, the staff need to turn up at work . That means going out.
I have been going out every single day to work since this lockdown started – what about you – been hiding away indoors have you.
I would rather see everyone back at work – just like I am and only those who deem theirselves to be vulnerable should hide away indoors. If you need the nanny state to help you, then more fool you.
perhaps i should help you marcus..
current global deaths recorded due to covid – 269068
global population as of 13/4/2020 – 7,777,504,748
death rate from covid expressed as a percentage of global population 0.0034%
That means currently 99.9966% of the population of this planet are fine, after months and months of this virus circulating.
It will probably be down to 99.98% being fine by the end of this year, from the current 99.9966%
Stop flapping and panicking and get on with your life.
Well said sir!
I do go out to work, I see first hand what this virus is doing and I have dealt with people’s family’s who have lost loved ones. Going out to work is essential and I didn’t say not to go to work did I? Read what is written, don’t interpret what isn’t.
Just to add, my point was about non essential travel and buying non essential items.
If your in the shop anyway buying essential items, why not put a tray of plants in your basket, ive seen plenty of people putting alcohol in their baskets whats essential about that, im a key worker i took plants to one of my elderly ladies to plant in her pots as she hasnt been out for weeks not even to the food shop, shes very ill & it made her day put a lovely smile on her face, &, id do it again tomorrow just to see that smile.
you say…Going out to work is essential
and you say… How would you feel if you went out and in 3 weeks one of your family members die from it?
out, is still out, is it not.
You made no reference to any reason for going out – just out. Do not make up stuff marcus – your post is quite clear.
I have provided accurate representation for my figures – get on with your life and stop flapping about it.
I stated, flout the rules, essential travel is withing the guidelines and that includes work. I also wrote using excuses to flout the rules and I also wrote do as your told. So what’s your problem? Your doing what you need to do, your obeying the rules, why come at me for, just to rise me? I’m not flapping, I’m not panicking, I’m working at the moment. I’m working to ensure that the company I am charge of will be able to provide jobs and wages for the foreseeable future when all this is over.
i cannot stand it when individuals sit their barking orders at people …your post states.. “do as you are told for once”
the people are not your children and you have no right to bark orders like that.
tesco’s is open and sells flowers and paint – are you saying people shouldn’t buy those things – if it is on sale, then it should be bought. What about the staff at those business selling flowers – they need their jobs – should people not be allowed to buy flowers for someone that has died of covid. Should people sit indoors and stare at the walls when they could be getting that spare bedroom painted.
people need things to occupy their minds whilst sat indoors – or their mental health suffers and so do those around them – and then the police get called in the worse situations.
Yes, do as your told. Read the guidelines, maybe you have trouble speaking English and reading what has been written. Non essential travel. I can’t stand it when people like you seam to think the world is against them. What in my first comment did I write that would upset you and make you moan at me if YOU ARE FOLLOWING THE RULES
ditch the capitals eh – that denotes shouting and stop insulting me by insinuating that I struggle with English – your conduct is that of someone who shouts and is rude when they lose the argument –
good bye – no further discussion on this point will be had with you, especially if you cannot see where you went wrong in your first comment.
Read the article, comments are based on the article. It’s not that hard. I’m not rude by any means. I also can’t see where I went wrong in my first comment and I can usually see both sides of a story. Let’s agree to disagree.
Over three hours and my post it still waiting for the moderator to clear it.
baboshka – then it has been denied after this length of time.
They only print what they like on here mate…
We should all be grateful it’s not EBOLA, as 95% of people die.
Just have consideration and stay home if possible.
Best wishes all.
Ebola another man made decease
Reading some of the moronic posts about going out is in unbelievable. You idiots. Go out get the virus then we can use you as lab rats as thats all your worthy for . Another way of culling idiots too. Win win apart from the poor NHS staff having to treat these ignoramuses
speechless hasn’t a clue.
If the vast majority will only suffer mild symptoms then the sooner the majority have had it the better – then a greater pool of people with antibodies will be available to assist in creating vaccines etc and there will be less hosts to infect, which ultimately assists those who are vulnerable and still indoors isolating.
Speachless your just a sheep given up all your rights for a flu let the sun and your body work hows its meant to be and may be do some research open your eyes
