UPDATED: A Newport woman has been left with a broken arm, fractured cheek bones, a broken nose and has had her teeth knocked out after she was brutally attacked in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The incident took place just after midnight between Caesars Road and Drill Hall Road in the center of the town, when a unknown man callously attacked the 54-year-old from behind, leaving her with horrific injuries.
Officers from Hampshire Constabulary raced to the scene alongside paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service before conducting a search of the area, according to eye-witness reports.
The suspect, who is believed to have spoken with a Eastern European accent, ran towards Sainsbury’s superstore after stealing the victim’s handbag containing a mobile phone, bank cards, cash, keys and make up. He is described as white, around 6ft tall with a bald head.
Police carried out door-to-door enquiries in the area yesterday as an investigation is launched to identify the attacker.
Investigating Officer DS Gary Lyons of Newport CID said:
“This is a very unusual crime in the amount of violence used and occurred in a quiet residential area. This would have been a very frightening ordeal for the victim and I am appealing for anyone with any information about this incident to come forward.
“Were you in the area at the time? Did you see anyone matching the description hanging around the area or making their way from the scene?

“I would also like to appeal to anyone with private CCTV in the area to speak to us as this may help with our enquiries into identifying the suspect.”

UPDATE THURSDAY – Hampshire Constabulary have today released a further description of the suspect.
He is described as white with a possible slight tan, aged between 20 and 30 years old and is said to be around 5ft 11″ tall and of average build. The suspect is believed to have short dark hair and dark eyes and no facial hair – Generally of presentable appearance.
