A local family are appealing for the community’s help in identifying a vehicle which smashed into their truck in Merstone yesterday – and then simply drove off. At just before 18:30, Claire, her partner and 2 children – aged 7 and 13 – were travelling towards Arreton from Newport when a black car – thought to be an Audi SUV – pulled out of Merstone Lane, turning left towards Newport. As the Audi made the turn, the vehicle went across onto the other side of the road. Despite Clare’s partner’s efforts to avoid a collision, the offending car crashed into the rear of their Toyota Hilux pick-up – ripping the rear axle and prop shaft from the chassis. The car – registration thought to begin with either LV16 or LV17 – failed to stop at the scene and continued towards Newport.
A witness who followed the Audi prior to the collision has described seeing the vehicle being driven erratically from Bohemia Corner near Godshill. Anyone with information is asked to come forward with dashcam footage, which can be sent to [email protected]. Information can be passed to the Police by calling 101, quoting 44240049052.
