Dangerous driving conditions are expected overnight and into Tuesday morning, with forecasters predicting the mercury to drop to as low as -9c here on the Isle of Wight.
IW Met Service has issued a yellow ice warning for the Island, valid from 16:00 this afternoon (Monday) through until 11:00 tomorrow.
It’s said that very icy roads and walkways are to be expected overnight tonight as temperatures are predicted to fall as low as -8c, or perhaps even -9c in some spots – including central Newport. Most places will see between -3c and -5c.
Islanders should be aware of the risk on the roads, especially in rural parts and on untreated roads.
This morning, a car ended up on its roof after crashing on an ungritted road in Ryde.
PC Andy Ball, of the Roads Policing Unit, has issued words of advice for motorists:
“Please think about appropriate speeds on roads that are white and icy. Sometimes even 30mph is too fast. On these [icy] roads your stopping distances are 10x more than usual”.
Island Roads has confirmed that its fleet of gritters was deployed at 14:00 this afternoon (Monday) as the temperature is expected to dip below 0c as the sun sets. Another full gritting run will be carried out at 04:00 tomorrow morning.

Forecasters warn that ponds and harbours are likely to freeze over, and although the ice may appear solid, it is likely to be very thin and is too dangerous to venture onto.

that is sooo riduculous,.. imagine how damgerous it would be to have a driver, who had never been allowed to do more than 20,… going to the mainland, and being expected to do 70 on a mororway…
it’s bad enough here, having old duffers, doing 25-30 in 60 limit, when conditions are perfect…
the basic, simple, rule should be,.. if you can’t / won’t drive at a speed appropriate for the conditions,.. don’t drive!
20mph is the only way to stop numpties speeding.
