22-year-old Marcus Burgin has been given a 3-month driving ban after being found in charge of a motor vehicle whilst drunk.
Police were on a routine patrol in the area of Seaclose Park, Newport on 16th October when they came across Burgin sat in the driver’s seat of his Renault Clio. The engine was running.
Officers requested that a breath test be carried out, which Burgin, of Camp Road in Freshwater, completed. He was found to be almost twice the limit.
An evidential reading at the Police station recorded 66 – the legal limit being 35.
Defending, Wendy Cook said that Burgin was terrified of being in front of Magistrates and hadn’t driven since the incident. She explained that her client had been drinking with colleagues that afternoon and did not intend to drive, but a friend text to say they were stranded in Newport and needed a lift.
Magistrates handed Marcus Burgin a 3-month driving ban and ordered him to pay a £192 fine, £85 costs and a £34 surcharge – a total of £311.

Rearrange into a well know phrase or saying……..
Why Rearrange the well know phrase in reverse?…or in your case Backwards…
Whatever happened to “sorry mate, can’t, been drinking”
last bus from newport to freshwater is about 23.25 on a saturday – ..not buying his story about a mate needing a lift.
Three month ban disgusting could have killed somebody
I always thought the minimum ban for drink driving was 12 months, however, it now seems like helping a friend out reduces the sentence by two thirds…
Not the right message to send out in the run up to Christmas…
But wasnt he stranded in Newport if he was drunk and lived in Freshwater?
How did he intend to get home ?
Before he attempted his heroic deed to help a friend in need
3 months ban!!! Pathetic sentence imo. Why didn’t he tell his “mate” to get a taxi? Should have at least 12 month ban for drink driving
I thought it was a minimum of 12 month ban for drink driving. What is it now, everytime you get stopped for drink driving you need to say, my mate needed a lift….JOKE
