UPDATED: A hand grenade has been found on a beach near St Catherine’s Point on the South coast of the Island.
Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts from Portsmouth are due to safely identify and dispose of the grenade, which was discovered at Watershoot Bay yesterday lunchtime (Friday).
It is believed to be an historic item from WWII.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team are on scene to the West of St Catherine’s Lighthouse and have set up a cordon around the device in the interests of public safety.
UPDATE: The device has been successfully detonated and the area made safe.
Anyone who finds suspect ordnance washed up along the shore should call the Coastguard on 999.
