Ambitious plans to transform Totland Pier into one of the Isle of Wight’s leading dining destinations have come to an abrupt halt, with the entire pier now listed for sale at £4million.
The 140-metre Victorian pier was meant to house a flagship fine-dining restaurant known as ‘The Pier’. A preview event in October 2023 promised a high-end experience featuring locally sourced produce and seating for up to 220 guests, with plans to open in Spring 2024.
But those plans never materialised and appear to have completely stalled.
The Bay, at the dry end of the Pier, did, however, open as a cafe. But the venue has been closed since November 2024 following ‘significant flooding’ caused by a failure in the underfloor heating system.
An announcement at the time said the venue would be shut for ‘a couple of months’, but it has not reopened since, and no updates have been provided since the initial statement.
Now, the entire site is up for sale, marketed as a waterside investment opportunity. The sale includes the freehold pier structure, the existing café-bar, and planning permission for a further restaurant development at the pier head. It also comes with 20 leasehold moorings from the Crown Estate.
The current asking price of £3.5million – as listed with Savills – appears to fall short of the claimed total investment made by the owners of approximately £4million.
(Update – a revised price of £4million has now been listed)
Totland Pier, originally opened in 1880, had been at risk of demolition before being saved by private ownership in 2013. Structural work to rebuild the pier took several years, using reinforced concrete and marine-grade materials.

It is a lovely spot.
I am curious as to how the two restaurants could co-exist side by side, but also how and where the waste would go.
Obscene and yest another embarrassment for Islanders
What a lovely place that looks and would be great for the Island but where would people park?
One major flaw I think?
I understand there is only about 4 spaces outside and nowhere else near by.
