Public toilets at a popular Isle of Wight beach could be replaced by state-of-the-art but pay-to-use facilities. Currently, the toilets at Yaverland, in the public car park are free. In new plans from Sandown Town Council, approved at its meeting earlier this week, members agreed to get a loan to provide new facilities at the popular site, opposite The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary. The town council has agreed in its budget for the next financial year to include the provision for a £250,000 Public Works Board Loan to replace the Yaverland toilets. It would be repaid over 12 years, with repayments costing around £27,000 a year. The council agreed to provide the facilities through a new unit — similar to those it recently opened at Eastern Gardens, further along the coast, but with a different façade. A spokesperson for the town council said they hoped they could be installed and operational in time for summer 2025. The toilets would be provided by Danfo with one disabled cubicle and three standard unisex ones, with 2 external showers. Other work is still required before the toilets can be installed, including design specifications and securing planning permission. The town council has recently agreed to increase the fees to use public toilets in Sandown to 50p all year round, instead of falling to 20p in the winter.

Took my grandson in rhem yesterday rhey were disgusting
KYLO?????????????????????????????
poor man are you allowed near kids again
Leave the poor man alone not his fault he was wrongly accused
Should off been lock up years ago you fool
Paying to have a pee really does take the piss. If this is due to vandalism simply install decent CCTV that also records sound outside the doorway to the toilets
Yes and let Sandown council tax payers carry on paying for the decent cctv” and the loos. I don’t think so. You use them, you pay for them. Fair and square.
Some of us locals cannot afford to keep paying 50p
Imagine having to use them 4 times a day whilst out and about
It is criminal and is attacking the poor.
I think most would prefer just a concrete block building, no frills, a Stainless steel pan and urinal, as basic as it gets, and a ‘pay to use’ toilet tissue dispenser so that if you do number 2’s you can buy a small pack of tissue, but have a ‘free wee’.
A push button tap outside to wash hands. Use the air outside to dry them.
That way less for vandals to smash
Less cost in maintaining them.
The toilet tissue not pulled out to block toilets or set fire too.
Decorating costs to a minimum
BUT still free to use and cheap for the Council to both build, run, and maintain.
So as Ivy Serel says, ‘so the council won’t be doing that’
Those type of toilets work well at Hayling Island
That’s what they do in France and it works.
you’ve got a precept, don’t start borrowing money, especially to simply replace what you have already got, live within your means. Save up and then do the work if you must do it, I say again DONT BORROW MONEY.
Who has got change in there swimming costume ?
Many of the oiks now coming here will likely just poo and wee in the sea, adding to the effluent albeit it minced up already dissolved in the water.
Another nail in the coffin for tourism then. What is the island going to do when all the tourists stop coming due to these types of ridiculous ideas?
These little town councils really take the biscuit, borrowing 250,000 and paying back 324,000, and thus committing the residnets to have an outstanding debt for 12 years, and this is for one project , how many more so called projects do they have in the offing that will include incurring more debt.
P*ss up the wall or sh*t in a Bush, cheaper in the long run.
Horses sh*t in this car park all the time.
Yes great for me, being hung like a Donkey and licensed to Sh1t in the street
Nice of them to have a few walls and a large bush to pee into outside. Greed, pure greed.
Do Sandown Town Council have any idea how to operate effectively and economically?
They rebuilt the Broadway Centre a few years ago and the Residents got stung with a huge bill sue to accounting incompetence. What is it now? At least two years in a row of inflation busting Precept increases, and yet they still want to spend more, leaving the Tax Payer to pick up the bill years down the line!
Perhaps if those on Benefits did not get such a huge ‘discount’ on their Council Tax, then the rapidly dwindling WORKING public would not get so royally ripped-off year on year again and again!
We want to encourage tourism and provide decent facilities, yes, but 50p per toilet use is just unfair. There are many people who need to use these facilities and cannot/wont pay, therefore the comments others have made about walls and bushes will be the case. Although these toilets are not very nice to use, imagine a line of people using the side walls during the summer.
As a runner, who sues the seafront for exercise, i don’t carry money or a debit card but do need facilities sometimes. The water dispenser is shut off due to being abused by campervans and builders. there’s just no provisions for people along what is a fantastic beach.
Hell no! Wont be getting my money
Pay twice to ‘Park and Piss’ – only on the Isle of Wight.
It’s like a shopping centre or restaurant charging for use of its toilets. Doesn’t happen.
Put off just one tourist and could cost thousands, wee need to encourage tourism, not charge them. Council tax payers already pay Council Tax,car parking and local businesses rates and rent. Just use out wall outside wall for a pee.
I for one won’t be giving them my 50 pence, back to taking a wee in a bucket and tipping it out outside the council office and poop in a Sainsburys bag then in the bin! Someone tell me why we pay council tax and business rates again?
Robbing bastards! Charging people to use the loo just means nasty dirty gits use people’s houses / walls, and pee up business premises, instead. So unfair. Sandown Town Council can’t see further than the end of their nose.
Will never use these, or any other pay-to-use toilets!
I go to Yaverland beach all the time. I would not use a unisex public loo. I would not use the current ones – not unisex – unless absolutely necessary, they are filthy and they stink.
There will be a lot of indecent exposures taking place in
Sandown.
Who will pay.
How can a dump like Sandown charge 50p to use the toilets
The Ritz Hotel don’t charge 50p
What crooked “idiot” comes up with these money making ideas?
I will NEVER pay 50p to use toilets in Sandown,
Sandown is a Toilet!
Wankers.. paying to piss is a bloody discrase
No one is talking about the iwcc spending money to build houses for asylum seekers .and worry about spending a penny
£75000 in interest. Why not just modernise the existing building? Could probably do that for £75000.
I blame people who pay the fee.
P@ss up the wall, if people don’t comply these greedy B’stards
cannot charge such fees.
Do what others do, don’t close the door leave it open for others to use,
there is no room in this world for Draconian Councils
The B’stards are already stinging the motorist with their excessive
parking charges and their green waste charges.
This Council is a disgrace.
Name and shame the Council. I have put out the message about what
IW Council are doing to tourists and locals.
My advice to tourists is to go elsewhere, go to a place that does not
sting holidaymakers.
