GAS BBQ EXPLOSION FEARS PROMPT FIRE TURNOUT

firecrewssandownshanklinThree pumping appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to Sandown seafront this lunchtime (Friday) over fears a gas canister was about to explode.

Crews from Newport, Sandown and Shanklin were tasked to the scene on the Sandown to Shanklin Revetment at around 12:35 following reports from members of the public of a gas BBQ on fire, prompting fears the gas canister could explode at any moment.

The Incident Support Unit from Newport Fire Station was also tasked to the scene near to ‘Wight Water’, however firefighters were stood down at around 13:00.

No one has been injured in the incident, which has been brought under control.
