Domestic Violence Awareness Month saw Utilita’s Newport Energy Hub raise more than £550 for Paragon – the Isle of Wight’s Domestic Abuse Charity.
Inspired to help others following her own experience with domestic abuse, Energy Expert Sarah Hutton instigated the fundraising efforts throughout the month of October – with awareness wristbands, homemade cakes and raffle tickets on sale for a donation. A host of local businesses kindly donated raffle prizes in support of the cause.
Commissioned by the Isle of Wight Council to deliver their Integrated Domestic Abuse Services, Paragon offers targeted support for adults and children who are experiencing abuse.
Later this month (22nd November), the hub will welcome the charity at a Saturday Takeover event – a brand new partnership initiative aimed at supporting the local community.
Sarah explains:
“We all know domestic violence is common, but lots of people don’t realise just how common it is. It’s something one in five of us will experience, but only a quarter of these crimes are reported.
“Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a chance to not only share information about the support that is available, but also to bust the myths. I wish that I had known what support was available during the 13 years that I needed help. Raising awareness about domestic violence is crucial and something I care passionately about, but equally important is ensuring that victims know where to turn for protection, guidance, and legal recourse.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to Paragon for delivering the Dragonfly Project and for the training I have had to help support anyone who may be suffering. Did you know that if you need to call 999, but can’t speak, you can make a silent 999 call? After you’ve dialled tap in 55 on your mobile, it will connect you to the police, who should then be able to find you. Anyone needing support can also contact the National Domestic Abuse helpline on 0808 2000 247 (24 hours).”

Hub Supervisor James Ball added:
“Sarah has shown great drive, determination and passion on this project. She is a great ambassador for Utilita and we’re all very proud of the work she has done with Paragon.”
The Utility Energy Hub is open from Monday to Saturday at 121 High Street, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 1TP (closed Bank Holidays).
