A car has been destroyed following a collision with a lamppost on Racecourse on the outskirts of Newport this morning (Saturday).
Emergency services are currently on scene between Binfield Corner and Racecourse Roundabout, where a Fiat Punto has left the road and collided with a large lamppost.
The vehicle was travelling towards Newport at the time of the impact, which has snapped the lamppost in 2 and ripped the front wheel off the Fiat.
The car rolled onto its roof.
Police and paramedics were called to the scene shortly after 04:00.
The driver is understood to have been taken to St Mary’s Hospital, but their injuries are not life threatening or life changing.
Racecourse is currently closed in both directions but is expected to re-open shortly following recovery of the car.
Island Roads are also in attendance at the scene to make safe the damaged street furniture and to clear debris from both the road and cycle path.
UPDATE @ 06:00 – Racecourse has now re-opened in both directions.
UPDATE @ 10:42 – A 19-year-old man from Cowes has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and driving without a licence.
He is in custody at Newport Police Station following a check up at St Mary’s Hospital.

What’s happening our roads are getting like a destruction derby!
About time these drivers re-take their driving tests to check their abilities to go on road.
You can’t educate pork-heads, another idiot will be along soon…
Retake his test, he didn’t have a Licence !
This 19 yrs old lad didn’t even have a driving licence
The road is wet following heavy downpours over night!! Slow down that is the answer.
No, don’t drink and drive is the answer.
But of he had not crashed, he’d still be at large driving drunk and without a licence. His next crash might have wiped out innocent people. At least he only hurt himself rather than bringing devastating news to some poor family. It’s just a shame he only hurt himself.
Yay it’s Christmas time. Time to play drunk driver bingo again!
Surely the answer is if caught, death penalty
Mmmmmm maybe just maybe the police should put their efforts into being around a sneaky corner at night time catching the SERIOUS offenders instead of cameras after mostly innocent driver doing a couple of m p h over the limit
How many times do we read about people in court because of drink/drug driving?
When was the last time you read about someone police took to court for being a ‘couple of mph over the limit??
Grow up!
At least he only hurt himself and not anyone else. Mind you, he’ll probably only end up with points on his non-existent licence.
