A flood alert has been issued for the Eastern Yar following heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, with flooding possible throughout today (Friday) and into the weekend.
The Environment Agency states that river levels remain high following 33mm of rainfall. Flooding is currently affecting low-lying land, roads, cycle tracks and footpaths along the river between Whitwell and Bembridge.
At Langbridge and Alverstone, river levels are beginning to fall, but flooding of Golf Links Road and Moreton Common Road is expected to continue throughout the day and overnight into Saturday. In Sandown, flood risk is forecast to reduce from 17:00 today.
Drainage issues are also being reported around Fort Holiday Park, where ditches are struggling to cope due to elevated river levels.
The Environment Agency has confirmed that only a small amount of rain is forecast over the next 5 days, and conditions are expected to gradually improve in Alverstone within 24 hours.
Officials are actively monitoring rainfall and river levels and have said they will ensure that rivers remain clear of any reported blockages.
Motorists are being reminded never to drive through flood water, with just 30cm of fast-flowing water capable of moving a vehicle.
