The animal has managed to fall into the River Yar that runs alongside the Newchurch to Arreton cycle path and is unable to get back up the embankment to safety. Thankfully, the bull is uninjured.
Two fire appliances from Newport and Shanklin are at the scene alongside the Incident Support Unit from Newport and an off-road Land Rover from Ryde having been called to the rural location at 11:00.
Crews are now working out the best way to assist the animal alongside officers from the RSPCA. One option being explored is to use a crane-like system to lift the heavy animal from the river bed.
The cycle path has been closed temporarily in the interests of safety.
UPDATE @ 13:35 – Nearly three hours after being called to the incident, firefighters remain on the scene this afternoon attempting to rescue the animal.
UPDATE @ 15:15 – The animal has been successfully rescued this afternoon using a system of strops. Emergency services have now left the scene.
