One appliance from the town’s fire station is currently in attendance at St Josephs Close near to Kent Avenue, where it is said a bonfire has become out of control. It is understood initially two appliances were turned out to the scene including one from Newport at around 13:50.
Island Echo readers got in touch a short while ago after thick smoke was seen to billow into the sky, prompting fears of a large fire in the town. A strong smell of plastic can smelt according to residents living near by.
UPDATE @ 14:30 – The bonfire has been extinguished and crews have now left the scene.
