UPDATED: Firefighters, paramedics and Police are attending a road traffic collision on Carpenters Road near St Helens tonight.
A blue VW Polo has collided with a hedge and come to rest on the opposite side of the carriageway in the single vehicle crash, which occurred sometime before 23:25.
The driver, who fled the scene, has been successfully tracked by a local dog unit.
Firefighters from Sandown are now working with the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service to free the runaway who has become stuck in a nearby field. The extent of his injuries is unknown.
The road remains open, but recovery of the vehicle is underway.
UPDATE @ 01:00 – A male has been stretchered to an awaiting ambulance by fire crews and is now being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
No one else has been injured in the incident.
UPDATE @ 01:42 – Emergency teams have now stood down and the vehicle has been recovered.
UPDATE FRIDAY – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that a 19-year-old man from West Sussex has been arrested in connection with the incident.
