firegknbackentranceUPDATED: Firefighters remain at GKN Aerospace in East Cowes this morning (Saturday) following an early morning turnout to reports of a fire at the Ferry Road site.

Crews from Newport and East Cowes were called to the manufacturing plant at around 05:30 after it is understood a small fire developed inside one of the industrial autoclaves, a pressure vessel used to cure composites. 

The Foam Salvage Tender based at East Cowes was also deployed to the incident due to the chemicals and other materials stored on site.

Work has currently been halted in several departments surrounding the autoclaves, while fire crews monitor Autoclave 3 as the machine cools.

One appliance remains on scene.

UPDATED: Access to the Autoclave was achieved after waiting for the machine to cool to 50 degrees. Crews left the scene shortly before 14:00.
