UPDATED: Firefighters have this morning (Monday) successfully extinguished a car fire on the outside of Cowes after a car collided into the rear of a tractor.
The incident occurred shortly after 06:00 on Newport Road, Northwood outside the Isle of Wight County Ground, resulting in the temporary closure of the Cowes to Newport route.
The road is now passable, however minor delays are to be expected in the area while recovery of the vehicles involved takes place.
UPDATE TUESDAY: Island Echo understands that the driver of the car involved in yesterday’s collision has received serious injuries and was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by Coastguard helicopter yesterday afternoon.
UPDATE TUESDAY @ 15:30 – Collision Investigation officers from the mainland have this afternoon been examining the site of the crash on Newport Road, indicating the seriousness of the injuries sustained in the collision.
Hampshire Constabulary’s Collision Investigation Unit is brought over to the Island when life-changing injuries or deaths occur on the road, as well as for complex investigations.
Police have issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward with the yellow ‘CRASH’ signs erected at the scene.
Anyone who may have seen the collision or has information relating to the incident is asked to contact the Isle of Wight Roads Policing Unit at Shanklin Police Station on 101.
