UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are attending a building fire on Pound Lane in Ventnor this afternoon (Friday).
Appliances from Ventnor, Shanklin, Ryde and Newport are all on scene behind the town’s Co-Operative store, alongside the Incident Command Unit. They were called to the scene at around 14:50.
It is thought the building affected has work being carried out by contractors.
A cordon has been put in place on Pound Lane, but Ventnor High Street remains open as normal.
UPDATE @ 15:40 – The incident – a roof fire above DJ’s coffee shop – has been brought under control and extinguished.
It has been confirmed that the fire was started accidentally in the roof space by contractors who are carrying out renovation works on the 5-storey property.
Graham Orchard, Station Officer for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has praised the quick actions of the initial crews in attendance who managed to extinguish the fire very quickly using just a hose reel.
Crews from Newport and Ryde are now being stood down. 2 appliances remain in attendance but are making up in preparation to return to station.
