UPDATED: Fire crews from Newport and Ryde are attending a fire at Stotesbury’s fish and chip shop in Newport this morning (Wednesday).
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene at 09:10 following reports of smoke issuing from the popular chippy on Upper St James’ Street.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have entered the building to tackle the fire in the shop’s range.
UPDATE @ 09:55 – The small fire has now been extinguished and the building is being ventilated using Positive Pressure Ventilation.
Crews from Newport are continuing to monitor the situation, especially the ventilation system to where the fire spread. A covering jet has been established to the rear of the building.
Although it was initially feared persons were trapped inside the terraced property, that thankfully was not the case.
Upper St James’ Street was closed to traffic for a time but has now re-opened.
