FIRE BREAKS OUT AT INDUSTRIAL UNIT IN NEWPORT

UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are attending a fire at AJ Wells on Newport Industrial Estate this afternoon (Tuesday).

4 appliances from Newport, Ryde and East Cowes are currently tackling an extractor fan fire at AJ Wells on Bishops Way, off Manners View.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus have entered the building, which is understood to house hazardous materials used for manufacturing such as liquid nitrogen.

The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have an ambulance crew and officer on scene and are treating 2 people for the effects of smoke inhalation.

All staff members have been evacuated.

UPDATE @ 14:10 – The fire has been successfully extinguished using 3 hose reels and BA crews have now withdrawn. Thermal imaging is being used to check for any hotspots.

UPDATE @ 14:35 – With the fire now out positive pressure ventilation is in action to rid the building of lingering smoke.

All crews are making up in preparation to stand down from the incident.
