Today (Saturday) the Isle of Wight Festival honoured David Bowie, whose last ever UK performance was on the main stage here on the Island back in 2004.
Masks were sold across the site to raise money for Stand Up To Cancer and thousands of festival goers donned their masks this afternoon in a tribute to a true legend. The proceedings began with a message from Jack Whitehall before festival goers sang along to ‘Heroes’, ‘Rebel Rebel’ and ‘All The Young Dudes’ as excerpts from his last ever performance was shown on two huge screens next to the main stage.
Ahead of The Corrs appearance on the main stage, Andrea Corr and Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet (pictured left) surprised revellers with a rendition of ‘Starman’ creating a truly special moment honouring a man who is an important part of the festival’s history.
John Giddings, the festival organiser and David Bowie’s agent for over 30 years, introduced the tribute and described David as a ‘true friend to the festival’. The hospitality bar has also been themed to honour the British legend with iconic pictures and named after his most recent album the ‘Black Star’.
Tonight The Who will take to the main stage and the festival will close tomorrow evening with a performance of a lifetime from Queen + Adam Lambert.
