It’s the end of an era at popular fish and chip shop Ozze’s Plaice as current owners Ozze and Andie Mehmet serve the community for the final time this evening (Wednesday).
The chippy, in the heart of Pan Estate, has been run by Osman Mehmet (known as Ozze) and his wife Andrene for many years and is one of the most popular fish and chip takeaway spots on the Island.
Located on Royal Exchange, the establishment is known for its quality service, tasty food and generous portions. Those passing the chippy, either at lunchtime or dinnertime, will often see queues stretching out the door, such is its popularity.
Although they are retiring, Ozze’s Plaice will not be closing for good. Instead, the business is being handed over to new owners Steve and Elvie, who will take over from tomorrow (Thursday).
It is understood that Ozze and the team have been working with Steve and Elvie in preparation of the ownership change.
Customers were queueing outside of the shop more than 15 minutes before it opened earlier this afternoon.
Taking to Facebook, Ozze has said:
“Thank you all for your support and custom over the years.
“We hope you will give the same support to Elvie and Steve as they take over from us
“Take care everybody. Hope to see you around. Many thanks again.
“Ozze and Andie.”
Ozzie and Andie’s final shift finishes at 20:00 this evening.

Happy retirement Ozzie and Andie you sure
knew how to run a great chippie.
Best of luck for the future.
With Stotesburys changing hands recently and going downhill, we can only hope the new owners keep things the way Ozze did, or we are done in Newport for a decent chippy.
