The main road between Sandown and Newport has been closed by Police tonight (Friday) due to a tree that has fallen across the carriageway, as bad weather hits the Isle of Wight – and it’s not set to ease up for days.
Motorists are being diverted in Apse Heath due to the fallen tree, which has come down on the A3056 Newport Road near to Raj’s Premier.
The road has been closed between Apse Heath roundabout and Branstone Cross, with motorists being diverted via Forest Road, Winford or Princelett Shute and Ventnor Road.
A large tree has also come down on Middle Road, severing access from Carisbrooke to the West Wight. Traffic is being diverted via Yarmouth Road.
Meanwhile, in Wootton, a power cut has hit the PO32 and PO33 area, with a total of 400 customers across 33 postcodes without electricity.
Power is not expected to be restored until 23:30.
As it stands, the wet and windy weather is set to persist until next Friday – meaning there are several rainy days ahead for the Isle of Wight.

The power was only off for less than a minute here in PO 32 (late this afternoon ). There haven’t been any further problems since (as of 23hrs).
