Hampshire Constabulary are reminding the public not to be surprised if they see additional police officers – including armed officers – in busy locations across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight tonight and tomorrow (Saturday).
Extra resources are being deployed on the streets in the region as a result of the UK terror threat level being raised from Severe to Critical. It comes after this morning’s terror incident in London which injured over 20 people.
Back in May of this year the Island’s Armed Response Team were taken off Roads Policing duties to focus purely on Armed patrols. The Authorized Firearms Officers conducted checks at Red Funnel’s ferry terminal and Hovertravel in Ryde, providing a reassuring – or maybe alarming – presence to those travelling across the Solent.
Police urge the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity by calling the confidential anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789321 or in an emergency by dialling 999.
