An Isle of Wight charity is appealing for an experienced cat owner with a secure garden and plenty of indoor space to offer a home to Louie – a rare Savannah cat with high needs.
Louie, an F2 Savannah hybrid, was brought to the Cats Protection Isle of Wight Cat Centre after his previous owner could no longer manage the demanding needs of 2 Savannah-type cats.
As a cross between a domestic cat and a wild African Serval, Louie retains wild traits, including high energy levels, a strong prey drive and specific behavioural needs that make him unsuitable for a typical home environment.
After 4 months in foster care, where he has flourished with full access to the house, Louie is now ready for a permanent home. However, the charity has struggled to find someone locally with the space, time and experience he needs. The appeal has now been widened to include Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey.
Elle Hatam, Cats Protection Regional Community Behaviourist, has said:
“Savannahs have a higher prey drive and Louie is no exception. He loves chasing his feather toys around, leaping and pouncing in a fascinating hunt manner.
“He will need access to secure outdoor space and freedom to roam the home to provide him with plenty of exercise and enrichment to be mentally stimulated and avoid boredom that could lead to behavioural problems.”

Louie’s long legs, sleek coat and large pointed ears reflect his Serval ancestry. While he is independent by nature, Savannahs can form strong bonds once settled, and Louie has a sweet personality when given space and patience.
Cats Protection will assess all potential homes and provide 6 months of free behavioural support. Louie may be suitable for a home with older children, but not with other pets.
