The end of the road for a Newport shop – which has seen use as a butchers for decades – has arrived as its current tenant, Woodfords and Sons, announces its plans to relocate.
The popular butchers took over the shop several years ago as the previous tenants, Downers, closed their long-standing business.
In a sad twist of fate, Woodford and Sons has now announced that it too is to leave the premises in the hopes of finding a more accessible store in a location that is less hounded by parking restrictions.
With the closure blamed on the low footfall in the town due to the decline in the number of shops operating in the previously bustling High Street, the butchery says that fewer people have any reason to head into town.
The shop will officially close as of this weekend (28th August). Whilst there is no news on any new location, customers are reassured that the Bembridge store will remain open and is not affected.

No surprise, always thought it was an odd location. Seems like butchers have become part of the farm shop model now.
Good luck to them.
Another reminder to the council about town centre parking. Do they really not get it yet?
Town centre parking has become too expensive now, with all the increases. The Council see motorists coming into town for shopping as cash cows, if you add the parking charge onto your food bill, it makes more sense to head out to Asda or equivalent, park for free, take your time and use their café.
– Town centres are being strangled..
As the UK stealth taxes to fund the hoards arriving here bite, then ordinary people cannot afford nice butchers like this ones prices. Most now have to buy cheap, sub standard supermarket food, but it is so worth it when you see the gratitude and happy people we allow to settle here………….isn’t it?
Racist bigot
How is that racist, he is entitled to his opinion, after all,you have more than your fair share of them !
There is no need to sacrifice the life of another species for our food. The meat industry is unsustainable; let’s move forward! It’s nice to see on Sandown High Street that we have a lovely new Vegan Deli & Café. A sign that we are moving forward.
Question…How do you spot a vegan??……Answer….You don’t have to spot them….they never stop banging on about it, making out they have the moral highground!
To give the businesses any chance the rents and rates will have to come down not just a token drop but a substantial drop
The meat is lovely but sadly very expensive I made Lamb hotpot it was gorgeous but only for a treat.
All the people moaning, but sneak to the big supermarkets for their BBQ fix.
