Concerns from members of the public for an elderly man in the sea off Shanklin has prompted the Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat and Coastguard Rescue Teams to respond to the area this morning (Friday).
At around 09:10 it was reported to HM Coastguard that a male was in the water off Shanklin seafront wearing clothing, which sparked the Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat to be launched to go to the male’s aid. However, it was soon discovered that the gentleman often swims in the sea with a t-shirt on before becoming acclimatized to the temperature and then removing his t-shirt.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from Ventnor and Bembridge were tasked to the scene, however Bembridge were stood down. Coastguard Officers from Ventnor spoke with the gentleman, checked he was safe and well and offered advice.
If you see someone in trouble on the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard
