A 53-year-old man pleaded guilty to the theft of a shaving brush and aftershave from a Shanklin store when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday.
Timothy Young, of Spring Gardens, Ventnor, was caught on CCTV pocketing goods to the value of £43.97 from Regency Beauty on 21st June.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told Magistrates that the shop manager noticed Young enter the store and act suspiciously near to some shelves. The manager, who was dealing with another customer at the time, tried to keep an eye on CCTV and soon noticed that a gap had appeared on the shelf where a product had previously been.
When confronted, Young denied that he had taken anything and said that he had simply pushed the products back, thus creating the gap. The manager then noticed a bulge in the defendant’s pocket and contacted the Police.
For Young, James Cameron told the court that his client – who was previously convicted of a shoplifting offence in 2019 – accepts that he made a wrong decision and had indeed breached an ongoing 12-month conditional discharge.
Young was ordered to pay compensation for the full value of the goods stolen and £85 in prosecution costs.

Good on the Shop Manager
Maybe he was just pleased to see him!
This man was already on a conditional discharge.. so they just slap his wrists, so to speak… I guess he has learnt his lesson then…NO..
.
you seem to get a stiffer fine if you do not have a criminal record as long as your arm nowadays
It’s like they want to make an example of someone doing something wrong for first time or making a silly mistake, yet get some rough lowlife moron and they are leniant on them. It’s like they expect it of them and think that is the way they are because they are “deprived” or “underprivileged” or some other label put on them by the do gooders that means they “can’t help it” and therefor e they mustn’t be blamed for it. Our culture has become upside down now and the opposite to how it should be. Thanks to the hand wringing pearl clutching social reformers.
