A teenage learner driver and his mum, who was acting as supervising passenger, have been banned from the roads after both were found to be under the influence of cannabis on their drive home.
Christy Jones, 38, of Acorn Gardens in East Cowes, pleaded guilty to being in charge of a motor vehicle with a proportion of a controlled drug above the specified limit, whilst her son, Kai Glasspool, of the same address, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the limit.
The incident occurred on 27th March this year.
At the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 1st August 2023, the court heard how an on-duty Roads Policing Officer noticed a Ford Fusion being driven with a faulty brake light on Binstead Hill.
Upon stopping the vehicle, Police noticed the driver smelt of cannabis. A passenger was also in the vehicle.
A roadside drugs wipe was conducted at the scene in which both Glasspool and Jones returned positive readings for cannabis.
Having been arrested and taken to Newport Police Station, further tests were carried out which returned above-limit test results for cannabis.
In defence, Barry Arnett said that Jones had gone to pick her son up and that he asked if he could drive the vehicle home – on L plates – to their home. He added that there was no evidence whatsoever of bad driving despite the high reading of 12ug/l returned by Glasspool, which is 6x the specified limit of 2ug/l.
Jones was banned from the roads for a total of 12 months back on 7th July this year for an offence of drug driving.
Magistrates handed Glasspool a 16-month driving ban, an £80 fine and £26 surcharge fee. Jones was handed a further 12-month driving disqualification, a £120 fine, a £48 surcharge fee and ordered to pay £85 costs.
This story was not able to be published in August due to the age of Kai Glasspool, however, reporting restrictions have since expired.

What a dumb couple, even when ban ends – getting insurance will be almost impossible.
Dumb and dumber 🙂
Excellent comment. Just about sums these two up!
Drugs are probably the only way some people can cope with the dismal driving standards on the island. In particular, roundabouts are like Russian roulette. Most drivers on the island don’t understand how to use them. I am staggered by the amount of idiots who wave you across when why have priority.
To that sort, who have zero respect of the law, an increasing car insurance policy will just mean they save even more money, as they won’t have any.
Prisons full of the worlds flotsam as well as our own benefit funded beings, so petty criminals KNOW they won’t be jailed now and any fines, IF paid are often less than legally taxing and insuring a car.
So until we curb mass illegal arrivals , criminals will have little to fear unless committing worse crimes than those already incarcerated
Except the vast majority of inmates are not immigrants…
As she wasn’t bothered about driving while banned, I don’t suppose she will be bothered about annoying things like insurance. Why was she also not convicted of driving while disqualified?
What makes you think they will bother with insurance?
Only on the Isle of Wight, Classic
I went to school with this lady, so what if she’s smoked a bit of weed, maybe it’s helped her get through life. I can almost guarantee there not many people who would have copped with the life she has been dealt. This lady is a inspiration. Good luck to you Kristy.
a s&&t life does not give any one the right to put the lives of others at risk.
Totally agree she has not been dealt a fair hand at all people in the comments know f all. She’s a great mum and we all make mistakes in life ppl going on like their sh*t don’t stink.
Everybody makes mistakes, doesn’t mean they break the law
She can smoke as much weed as she wants, I don’t care!! However, she can’t smoke weed and then be responsible for a leaner driver.
Inspiration…. Joker aren’t U!!
Inspiration for whom?
Might as well start as you mean to go on. No good learning drug free if you only intend driving while under the influence
Driving under the influence of drugs is now more prevalent than drink driving. There are too many cars on the roads. Perhaps longer bans might address both of these?
I am fed up reading about such idiots.
Instant imprisonment for drink and drug drivers is
the only way to stop these morons.
Give it a rest Paul stop getting your pecker out moron
The only person that sounds like a moron here is u Paul….
Paul people in glass houses should not throw stones
Be great if we had the capacity and funding to put drink/drug drivers in prison.
Seize the car and scrap it. The message may start to sink in then
If this woman thinks she is a good Mother, it just about sums up why so many kids think cannabis is ok. How on earth does she think smoking cannabis, which was still in her system, then claiming to be the responsible adult sitting next to her son on a driving lesson is acceptable? She’s not setting a very good example.
Alright Karen give it a rest. They are both adults here and she’s actually a great mum. How bout all the destruction alcohol causes to young adults these days? You know nothing so who r u to comment?
Was the car being driven dangerously? No. Was she able to supervise the driver? Apparently. It should be noted that some people can carry out complicated tasks when smoking cannabis , some people can’t function at all. Instead of an instant ban, police should carry out roadside competency tests, if they pass that, let them go. You can’t assume that because cannabis is in the body, a car can’t be driven safely. The law needs a re-think on this, cannabis will be legalised in the next couple of years, then what? I’d guess lots of people commenting know nothing other than what the media has told them about cannabis.
So it might be legalised, but driving over the influence won’t. Road side tests like ‘walk the white’ line. Hang on while I roll my fiver
Clearly they will not give this punishment even the slightest bit of attention. They will be back behind the wheel of a car as soon as they can, and the fact that they will be illegal won’tbother them in the slightest. If you see them driving, call the police and get them put behind bars before they choose to put someone or a child on the undertakers slab!
