An Isle of Wight man has been banned from driving for 2 years after being found with cocaine and amphetamine in his system whilst behind the wheel of a car.
32-year-old Kieran Light, of Berry Close in Newport, pleaded guilty to 3 charges of drug driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Light was driving along Cross Street in Newport at 14:25 on the afternoon of 20th October last year when he was stopped by Police for not wearing a seatbelt and for being on his mobile phone. Officers requested a drugs wipe be conducted by the Nissan Note driver, which returned a positive result.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, said that Light had a previous conviction for drugs but it was the first time he had been caught drug driving.
Defending, James Osborne said his client had been on a 2-day bender after splitting from his girlfriend. He said that Kieran Light, who runs his own maintenance company on the Island, won’t be able to work as a result of losing his licence.
Magistrates handed down a 24-month ban and a 12-month community order with 60 hours of unpaid work attached. Kieran Light was also ordered to pay £85 costs with a £95 surcharge.

Oh what a shame my heart bleeds
Is that all he got ,should be jailed & a lifetime driving ban
I totally agree Wolf.
A friend lives in Oxford. A drug driver recently killed an Oxford professor who was cycling , he was uninsured , no licence and had drugs in his system.
This is what drug and drink drivers risk every time they get behind a wheel.
We need serious penalties to deter them and custody is essential in that deterrent
This makes very sad reading :

So very sad to hear how a drug driver tragically ended the life of that man. So many of us want a safer society for our loved ones, yet those in authority have been infected with the liberal easy going attitude which is so soft on crime.
Coincidentally, I know of a former university lecturer left with brain damage from a similar encounter – he lost his vocation and independence for the rest of his life..
Sympathy for perpetrators (they always have an excuse) should be replaced by sympathy for the victims of crime and reintroduce the old concept of punishment, long since abandoned.
Personally, I have lost heart after repeatedly reporting drug running going on in my neighborhood, along with others – only to be continually ignored by the Police who have done nothing to address the problem.
The Police want the king pins not the runners which is why we all suffer! The sad thing is the IOW police know who’s supplying but won’t go after them because some are informants for them
Well I don’t know about that but, I hear the youths on motorbikes going round most evenings in all weathers. Despite all our reporting, they have never been intercepted – so we have lost hope and feel vulnerable and abandoned .
If you challenge them they call up their biker mates and then it gets dangerous..
You what ?
How do you know this then ?
Have you got contacts in the police force ? Or have you been watching to much Netflix ?
