21-year-old man Alfie Russell, who fled a crash in Ryde that seriously injured his passenger and was then caught drug driving in Wroxall just months later, has been sentenced.
Russell, of George Street in Ryde, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court where he admitted driving without a licence, driving without insurance, and failing to stop after a road accident.
These offences relate to a collision on 22nd October 2024 at the junction of High Park Road and Arundel Road in Ryde, where Russell, driving a black Seat Arosa, collided with a blue Ford Focus. The impact forced his car onto its roof, injuring his passenger, who sustained a significant head injury. The occupant of the Focus suffered minor injuries.
Despite the severity of the crash, Russell fled the scene on foot down Great Preston Road, leaving his injured passenger behind.
Magistrates also heard from the Crown Prosecution Service that Russell was caught committing fresh driving offences on 20th February 2025 in Wroxall. On that occasion, he was found to be driving a Vauxhall Tigra on Mountfield Road without insurance or a valid licence. Blood tests also revealed he was over the legal drug-drive limit for cannabis.
For the October 2024 crash, Russell was handed a community order running until 31st January 2027. He must complete 200 hours of unpaid work and attend 20 rehabilitation activity days. His driving record was endorsed with 10 penalty points.
For the February 2025 offences, the same community order applies, alongside an obligatory 16-month driving disqualification for the drug-driving offence. He was also ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs.
What a load of crap . No real punishment he will be back driving on the road within weeks , cos banning him will not stop him , he hasn’t got full licence no insurance and dont give a shit about rules

What would he have to do to get a custodial sentence? It is, I fear, time to retire lay benches and put District Judges into all Magistrates Courts. The concept of the lay Magistrate is one of being tried by your peers, by people who understand the local position and what is expected. This seems no longer to operate and too may people are walking out of courts believing they have “got away with it”. Sentencing needs an element of deterrent.
These judges or magistrates are unbelievable. So he’s basically got off for causing a major head injury whilst driving illegally. The person with the head injury may well develop memory problems later.
