DRIVER ASSISTED FROM HYUNDAI AFTER OVERTURNING CAR ON BLEAK DOWN

The driver of a Hyundai has been helped from his vehicle by firefighters after overturning the car between Rookley and Niton tonight (Tuesday). Police, fire and ambulance crews were mobilised to Niton Road at around 21:30 following reports of a single vehicle collision. Emergency services travelled across Bleak Down to find a blue Hyundai Getz on its side. Island Echo understands the car swerved across the carriageway before mounting a grass verge and crashing into a hedge on a downhill section of straight road heading towards Leechmore Cross. The driver has now been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital after being assisted by fire crews from Newport. Recovery of the car is underway but the road remains open in both directions. No offences have been identified at this time. It is the second road traffic collision on Bleak Down in as many days. A 16-year-old was arrested yesterday (Monday) after fleeing from the scene of a 2-car smash less than half a mile from tonight’s incident.
