A drink driver who crashed into a Range Rover in Cowes during the early hours of this morning (Saturday) was detained by members of the public as they tried to flee the scene.
Police were called to St Mary’s Road in the town at 01:04 to multiple reports of a road traffic collision involving a blue Mazda 2 near the junction with Denmark Road.
Officers arrived on scene to find that the Mazda had collided with an expensive Range Rover and another vehicle. The impact was at such force the vehicle’s airbags deployed.
Members of the public prevented the driver from fleeing the scene ahead of the arrival of Police.
A roadside breath test was conducted, which the driver failed. As a result they were arrested on suspicion of drink driving and taken into custody at Newport Police Station.
A charging decision is set to be made later this morning.
Take his/her licence away ban for min 5 years, big fine and made to retake a test no I am probably still asleep.

What an idiot to even think about driving after drinking more than they should be aloud . You might know that you cannot get away with it , and think of the consequence that your family may even suffer
Can public houses refuse to serve a person with alcohol? If so then some onus needs to be placed on them especially if it is evident the person is getting well and truly drunk, even walking can be dangerous when you are drunk. Off Licences have a duty to only sell to over 18’s but some law changes perhaps are needed for both Off Licences and Public Houses. What you do in your own house and at friends is up to you but a true friend wouldn’t let you out of the house if you were drunk.
