A Ryde man who drove his partner’s brand new Volvo while nearly 3x over the legal drink-drive limit has been banned from the road for more than 2 years.
45-year-old Barnaby Money, of East Hill Road, appeared before Magistrates in Newport on Friday 25th April, having previously pleaded guilty to drink driving, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.
The offences relate to an incident on 28th December last year, when Police spotted Money driving erratically near Havenstreet. The court heard how officers observed the Volvo XC40 accelerating aggressively and swerving onto the wrong side of the road shortly after midday.
Police followed the vehicle from Stroudwood Road and onto Newnham Road, witnessing further poor driving before the vehicle came to a stop of its own accord. Officers approached and immediately noticed the smell of alcohol.
A roadside breath test was failed, and subsequent checks revealed Money was driving without a valid licence, having lost it due to the totting up of penalty points.
At Newport Police Station, an evidential breathalyser reading showed 97 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit being 35.
Money, who has a previous conviction for drink driving dating back to 2009, was sentenced to a 25-month driving disqualification. He was also fined £240 and ordered to pay £85 in court costs.

A 45 year old should know better! no excuses
Shortly after midday on 28th December. I wonder which days between xmas and new year he was sober. Only a small fine, cheaper than paying insurance and a ban on driving doesn’t change his present situation of already under a ban. Chances are that the fine will take a long time to get paid. Happy new year.
The law is weak, hence people commiting such
crimes on a regular basis.
The police do the hardwork catching them, then they
get off scott free.

is usually full.
I wonder how many of these vehicles drive away
from the pub over the limit.
Maybe plod should start checking vehicles when driving
away from pubs.
The fines etc will pay for the extra police required or
the Council could employ more Civil Enforcement Officers
to carry out such checks.
There are NO excuses for drink driving in 2025
So hbmeen banned before, clearly did not learn.
Time to start scrapping their vehicles, just can’t educate or reason with some people
