A court has this week heard how a drink driver fell asleep at the wheel of his car before crashing into a hedge near Arreton.
28-year-old Marian Canuci, of Sandown Road in Shanklin, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with 1 count of drink driving – blowing 72 on the evidential breathalyser.
Magistrates heard that a Morrison’s petrol tanker driver alerted Police to a vehicle off the road at Hale Common on 3rd October. The tanker driver reported that the Kia Sportage was in a hedge near the Chilli Farm and that the car’s driver smelt strongly of alcohol.
Police arrived on scene to find Canuci and a friend – who was there to assist in recovering the vehicle – at the side of the road. Canuci, who works as a operator at Trucast in Ryde, suggested that he had fallen asleep at the wheel after drinking at Fever in Newport.
Canuci was handed a 20-month driving disqualification and fined £300, as well as being ordered to pay £85 costs and a £35 surcharge.
