Freshwater Bay Golf Club’s Junior Championship took place on Saturday (18th October), with 20 juniors and 30 spectators braving cold, windy conditions for a thrilling contest.
The juniors competed over 4 holes in a flag competition, split into 2 categories — ages 9 and under and 10 and over — with both age groups producing outstanding golf right to the wire.
In the older age category, the lead changed hands several times before Archie Brear claimed victory on the final hole. Alfie Luff had led for much of the round, but Archie reached the 18th with 5 shots still to use and calmly putted out to seal the win. Oliver Everson narrowly missed out on a top-three finish by just a foot — a fine effort on his 10th birthday.
The under-9s competition was equally competitive. Noah Holmes held an early lead before Ralph Hand took charge in the closing stages, but it was Leo Brear who produced an excellent finish to claim the win — completing a memorable double victory for the Brear brothers.
A separate Sportsmanship Award was also presented within each group, chosen by the group helpers to recognise players who demonstrated support, application and all-round attitude. The winners were Stanley Compton, Leighton Cato, Harry Holmes, Dougie Sloan, Ralph Hand, and Remi Mussel.
It was a fantastic showcase of young Island golfing talent and a proud day for Freshwater Bay Golf Club, highlighting the strength of its junior section and the future of the club.
