Shanklin Ladies began their Invitation Cup campaign in style, defeating Division 2 side Winchester City Flyers Reds on a perfect pitch at home.
The match began quietly, with both teams taking time to settle. Shanklin gradually grew into the game, dictating possession and applying continuous pressure on the visitors. Their persistence paid off in the 18th minute, when Gemma Woodford made a powerful run down the wing before cutting the ball back to Thea Broadhead, who calmly slotted home across the outstretched keeper to open the scoring (1–0).
Shanklin continued to press forward and doubled their lead in the 39th minute after a flowing attacking move carved open the Flyers’ defence. This time Broadhead turned provider, sliding a clever pass through to Woodford. Her initial shot was well saved, but she reacted quickest to bury the rebound and make it (2–0).
Half-time: Shanklin Ladies 2–0 Winchester City Flyers Reds.
Early in the second half, Shanklin’s dominance only grew. In the 58th minute, Broadhead produced a moment of individual brilliance, picking up the ball near halfway, gliding past several defenders, and finishing confidently into the bottom corner for her second of the afternoon (3–0).
Just seven minutes later, the hat-trick was complete. A pinpoint cross from Tilly Yardley found Broadhead perfectly placed to tap in from close range, sealing both her treble and Shanklin’s place in the next round (4–0).

Tilly nearly added her name to the scoresheet later on, her well-struck free kick tipped onto the crossbar by the visiting keeper. But by then, the result was beyond doubt. Shanklin controlled the game from start to finish, with their goalkeeper largely a spectator thanks to the team’s superior possession and attacking quality.
Credit must go to Winchester City Flyers Reds, who gave 100%, kept their heads up, and battled hard throughout the 90 minutes despite the scoreline.
Full-time: Shanklin Ladies 4–0 Winchester City Flyers Reds.
The result marks Shanklin’s first clean sheet of the season and a confident, composed performance to build on as they progress to the next round of the cup.
