Salary: £22,000 – £24,000 DOE + mileage

Due to our continued success and the demand to expand our editorial team, we are looking for an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and dedicated individual to join us as a Digital News Reporter.
Publishing over 5,900 stories a year to an ever-growing readership generating in excess of 30 million page views a year, Island Echo is the leading news website for the Isle of Wight. Established in 2012, the company has grown rapidly to dominate the local market and was named ICNN Community Website of the Year in 2021, as well as IW Chamber Micro Business of the Year in 2019.
You will become a crucial part of our small team based out of our offices in Ryde, keeping the Island informed and on the move following our ‘first, fast, free’ ethos. You will cover breaking news, live news and a wide variety of other genres we cover including courts and crime, community news and events.
You do not have to hold a formal qualification (such as NCTJ) to apply for this role – we are welcoming applications from all with a passion to learn, including those about to leave university or school. On-the-job training will be provided.
Please note that this role comprises of a weekend on-call rota. A full UK driving licence and own vehicle (car or motorcycle) are a must. Mileage will be compensated.
Key Responsibilities:
- Produce engaging stories with accuracy and speed
- Use a variety of multimedia tools to report news from across the Isle of Wight, including live streaming to Facebook, interviewing and taking photos/videos
- Curate storytelling articles from a variety of sources, including writing up press releases, as well as pitching your own original ideas to the editor
- Utilise social media platforms to reach and engage with the readership including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube and other social media
We are looking for a reporter who…
- is above all else reliable, trustworthy and punctual
- has a strong knowledge of the local area and the news industry both locally and further afield
- can work under pressure to tight deadlines in a sometimes stressful environment
- can deliver well-written, professional news articles to meet the goals set by the business
- has an understanding of social media, such as TikTok and Instagram
Working Hours:
- 36 hours a week (4 days)
including a 30-minute paid lunch break. Specific working hours TBC. - On-Call – 1 in every 3 weekends
Working remotely on a rota of 1 weekend on, 2 weekends off. This is covering breaking news and any other urgent news that arises.
