“Unless something is speedily done it will affect our visitors, and the visitors themselves will suffer enormously through not coming to the best place in the world: the Isle of Wight.”
The Isle of Wight MP announced his intention to lead a deputation to the Ministry of Transport the following week, hoping that they would send an adviser to assist the local authorities to put Island roads in decent order. The following day, Lord Burgh spoke at a meeting organised by the Isle of Wight Automobile Club at the Town Hall in Newport. Lord Burgh moved the following resolution:
“That this meeting of the road users of the Isle of Wight calls the attention of the Minister of Transport to the deplorable state of the main roads of the Isle of Wight, which have become a serious menace to the trade and commerce of the Island. “The roads speak for themselves. In the West Wight, they are not roads at all. The meeting has every sympathy with the Rural District Council, because they have been doing their best to keep the roads in repair for the fast, heavy traffic, for which they are not suitable. “The road to Shorwell, Brighstone and Brooke is alright while it is used by pneumatic-tyred vehicles.”
In response, Charles Dabell, Chairman of the Island Rural District Council, said:
“We have done the best we can to keep the roads in a fit state of repair. The roads, however, are not constructed to stand the present-day traffic.”

I bet he was more active back then with no socil media or emails than the apology we have at the moment in “seldom seen unless camera’s are there Seeley”
Of course you are only going to see pictures of him when cameras are about you plonker
Get Bob Seely to sort it
We can’t wait that long !!!
There you go 100 years later and the roads are still in a s**t state and this time we can blame island roads for the poor job they done in the past 10 years.
Oh the same as today then…the future hay..100 years later and island roads ..have achived the same..twats
I don’t think abusive words should be permitted on here. They set a low tone, and are no greater sign that the writer shouldnt be taken seriously.
I’d say today’s scandal is the vast amount of roadworks and the high repetition of works in the same areas. Alas our MP doesn’t seem bothered.
Bob is probably filling out his CV, won’t be in his position
much longer.
Our mp doesn’t care ,along with all the others ,they’ve had the lanes resurfaced where they live
Of course, emphasis on the roads around Brighstone. Atleast the railways were decent.
The photo above shows the road is in better condition than they are now, not a pothole in site, mind you that piece of road disappeared a long time ago.
The roads are worse now with Island Toads on the job.
Well said I totally agree with you.
