The Wightlink-Wight Mountain Cycle Racing Team were in action on the mainland this week looking to improve on their previous results.
On Tuesday, Chris Marsh, Oli Nolan, Charlie Orchard and James Veal competed in the last round of the Goodwood Summer Series. The 3rd Category race had a full field 80 riders, and the pace was fast and furious from the start. There were a number of early attacks, and the Wightlink-Wight Mountain Cycle Racing Team riders did their fair share of trying to get away in a break. At the bell, the bunch were all together and as they hit the chicane for the last time, Veal was best placed of the Wightlink riders on the home straight he hit full throttle taking a well-deserved 3rd place in the bunch sprint with Marsh and Orchard coming home in the bunch. 2nd Cat rider, Nolan’s race split up within the first few laps and he just missed a break leaving him to finish with the bunch, just out of the points.
On Saturday, Kev Chant and Ewan Cook competed in the South District Championships at the Goodwood 10-mile TT circuit. Conditions were pretty tough with a strong westerly wind, which meant the riders had a headwind at the start of each of the 4 laps.
Junior rider, Cook, pulled out a brilliant ride to take 3rd place in a time of 22.08 in the Junior event, a new personal best for him over 10 miles and the 12th fastest rider on the night. Chant was on great form and – despite the challenging conditions – he powered home in 19.11, equalling the course event record, to take the top spot. Chant will be competing in the upcoming Island Games in Guernsey and will be trying his best to bring home a medal in at least one of his races.

Well done that wee man!
