A crash involving at least 2 vehicles – a BMW and an Audi – has led to the closure of The Downs this morning (Saturday).
It was just before 10:20 that emergency services were alerted to the collision on Mersley Down Road, at the crossroad junction with Lime Kiln Shute and Rowlands Lane.
It’s here that an Audi RS6 and a BMW 1-series have come together, sustaining damage.
1 fire appliance from Ryde was mobilised in the interests of safety, with Police also deployed.
Thankfully, no serious injuries have been sustained.
Private recovery of the vehicles is still taking place, but the road is expected to reopen shortly.
All traffic is currently being diverted via Newchurch – or the main road through Wootton.
UPDATE @ 11:59 – The Downs has now reopened.
UPDATE MONDAY – A 44-year-old man from Ventnor has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving, Police have confirmed.
He has been released under investigation.
Well done more amassing driving standards on the island.Funny a few years ago police never came out to a knock like this happened to us said no injuries carry on.
It is certainly annoying to say the least when hundreds of drivers can be held up because of someone’s careless or deliberately bad driving. If no life threatening injuries or obvious offences, the police leave the insurance companies to sort it out. You can be heavily fined for driving 5 miles over the.limit and causing no damage, harm or hold ups, but get away with stopping hundreds of drivers going about their business.
Those days of reasonable behaviour after a bump like this have long gone. You are forgetting the “Blame” factor.
Somebody has to be to blame.
I would hazard a guess that the Audi (damaged on near side front) could not see the Beamer (NO damage viewable on all of near and rear so likely off side front) coming as it turned right and the Beamer could not stop in time.
In addition, if you stop to exchange details at this location, it would not be long before some other numpty turned up shouting at you to “get out of the way”.
I always try to avoid such roads as there are few “passing points” and it will always be likely that the other driver cannot, or will not reverse if they have just passed one and expect you to reverse half a mile..
Police come out because incidents like this are commonly caused by drink or drug driving. And according to the update, that may have been the case here.
