An emergency in the waters off Portsmouth earlier this afternoon (Tuesday) has led to an hour-long delay on Wightlink’s cross-Solent service.
It was at around 14:30 that Solent Coastguard was alerted to debris floating just off the shore at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour.
With fears somebody could be in distress, Wightlink’s St Clare car ferry responded to assist, alongside Hovertravel’s Solent Flyer and the Ministry of Defence Police.
Thankfully, it is understood that the debris has been linked to a fishing vessel – with no persons in distress.
Although all services and vessels in the area have now stood down from the incident, there is a knock-on delay to Wightlink’s operations.
Customers are being advised of delays of up to 1 hour on the Fishbourne-Portsmouth route.
Those travelling with Wightlink today are advised to continue to check in for your original sailing time as teams work to return to the scheduled timetable.
