UPDATED: A road traffic collision has forced the closure of The Downs by Police this morning (Tuesday).
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are in attendance at the scene between the junctions of Brading Down Road and Knighton Shute. The alarm was rasied at just before 11:10.
The apparent head-on incident has involved a Ford Fiesta – with L plates visible – and a 4×4 truck. 4 people are being assessed for whiplash but no one is thought to have been seriously injured.
Motorists should divert via Ryde, Havenstreet or Arreton. Newchurch remains closed for bridge repairs.
UPDATE @ 12:18 – Firefighters from Ryde are preparing to leave the scene and return to station. It has been confirmed that 1 appliance was mobilised following reports of smoke coming from one of the vehicles, however, it has been established that the ‘smoke’ was as a result of the deployment of air bags.
Recovery has been arranged and the road is expected to re-open in both directions shortly.
Mainland Armed Response Officers are in attendance as Roads Policing.
UPDATE @ 12:26 – Island Roads have now closed The Downs at the junction of the Hare & Hounds.
UPDATE @ 13:05 – The road has now re-opened in both directions.
