A 2-car crash on The Downs at Knighton has resulted in the road being closed in both directions this afternoon (Friday). Police, paramedics and firefighters are currently in attendance on Mersley Down Road, near the junction with Knighton Shute. Island Echo understands 2 vehicles have been involved in the smash, which occurred just before 13:20. 1 of the vehicles has come to a stop on the grass verge; the other is in the middle of the road. 2 fire appliances from Ryde and Newport are in attendance, but no one is thought to be trapped inside the vehicles. The road has been closed between the junction with Brading Down Road and Rowlands Lane. Traffic is heavy in the area. UPDATE @ 14:38 – Police have now closed The Downs at Downend – the Hare & Hounds junction – whilst recovery of the vehicles is undertaken. UPDATE @ 15:10 – It has been confirmed that 4 people have sustained minor injuries in this afternoon’s crash, with all 4 able to exit the vehicles involved. 2 people have been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for further treatment.
